MOF MASK

[project highlight]

I was approached by a speculative startup wanting to develop an early concept for a mask during the pandemic. This would be used to pitch to potential investors.

I worked to 3 Briefs, with each reviewed with a stage gate to unlock increasingly refined work.

We ended up working together for a week, and I generated multiple designs with different colour ways.

Sprint - 3-4 Hour

Brief - Provide us with an alternative to using other existing suit imagery (e.g. SpaceX suits) in our communications, some basic visual modifications to the existing space suit you have made. These renders are not to define a functional suit design per se, but rather to give an initial indication of the direction of our thinking with regards to a MOFMASK suit.

Initially, I was introduced to the proposed technology and created a very simple mockup of a mask in the visual style requested. This was based off a space suit I had previously designed. The alterations were kept simple, along with the visulisation.

This is the Space suit that I designed that I subsequently altered to make the mask in such a short sprint.

Exploration - 2 Days

Brief - A number of high-quality renders of one or more concept designs for MOFMASK. These concept drawings (akin to “artist’s impressions”) will help guide the development of the appearance of our mask(s), but are not necessarily a depiction of what the mask(s) will look like.....

The Second Phase involved more iterations of the design with increased feedback. This was completed over 2 days. I introduced rendered of a 3D scanned head to better show the mask as it sits on the face. There was a slow evolution towards refined designs and highlighted features.

The key design feature was the filter which was developed thought-out the project, with increasing emphasis placed on it as the design became more refined.

A second feature was the antifog clear plastic in front of the mouth, it helped with making the design feel high-tech and allowed people to see the user's expressions more easily.

Polish Design- 1 Day

Brief - Presentation of a highly premium product, as mentioned, this exists primarily to drive sales of the mask itself, but should nonetheless be sleek, elegant, as well as functional (or show consideration of functionality).

The Final phase of the project was refining the design and creating diagrams and high-quality visualisations of the product.

The final design included additional details surrounding the filter and the sensors.

The final renders were styled to have simple materials and visuals to help communicate the WIP nature of the product. It was important not to include too many details and to accommodate enough theoretical space for components. The really design would be bulkier but there was some space for batteries and all the key components in the design.
